White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and his wife Karen were among the many families and friends who made the journey from around the country on Memorial Day to pay respects and be close to their loved ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom.
The two were spotted at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday where their son Robert Michael Kelly is buried.
Kelly is a retired U.S. Marine Corps General. His son was killed while serving in Afghanistan in 2010, he was 29.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen comforted Karen Kelly while they visited Robert’s grave.
The following photos pull at the heartstrings of every patriotic American.
The Kellys took the time to speak to others who were visiting Arlington.
Photos of children who’ve lost a parent to war are especially heartbreaking, but serve as a sobering reminder of why we celebrate Memorial Day:
Spouses and friends were also in attendance to pay their respects:
Members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, or The Old Guard placed American flags in preparation for Memorial Day at the gravesites of service members buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
This tradition, known as “flags in” has been held for more than 60 years.
Within a few hours flags are placed at nearly 228,000 headstones and all flags are removed after Memorial Day, prior to the cemetery opening.
It’s a site to behold for patriots who must never be forgotten.
