Fox News correspondent-at-large Geraldo Rivera got into with former White House aide Sebastian Gorka over President Donald Trump referring to violent MS-13 gang members as “animals.”
Appearing on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” with host Jeanine Pirro filling in for Sean Hannity, Gorka wasted no time going after Rivera, who was initially critical of Trump for using the term, until he later learned of the full context of the remark, as Rivera explained on air.
“Look, I am disappointed with Geraldo’s non-apology,” Gorka answered. “You met the president, and how can you think for a millisecond that all immigrants are animals. He’s married to an immigrant and that’s absurd.”
A defensive River did not let the comment stand without a rebuttal.
“The problem with inflammatory remarks like Dr. Gorka’s attack on me is that it obscures the bigger issue,” he said later.
Rivera went on in a rambling dissertation to agree that MS-13 is a vicious gang and that its members have no right to be in the US, before Pirro finally pushed him to get to the point.
“When you talk about MS-13,” Rivera said, before adding racial connotations, “a tiny sliver of the 11 million undocumented immigrants, the danger is that you paint with a broad brush.”
“Ah, baloney!” Pirro shot back. “That’s baloney and you know it.”
Rivera went on to say Hispanic Americans are being painted by a broad brush in the focus on MS-13, much like Italian Americans were once tied to the mafia.
“Let’s call them what they are,” Pirro said. “I don’t care. It’s about time to say, ‘This is right, this is wrong. And this is legal and this is illegal.'”
But Rivera insisted on making this about an attack on Hispanics.
“Latinos, for the most part, want to hard working. Part of the American dream,” he said. “They don’t want to be rapists and murderers.”
