Earlier this month House candidate Pat Davis of New Mexico dropped a repugnant anti-gun campaign ad in which he smeared the National Rifle Association and proudly exclaimed, “F–k the NRA!”
During a fiery confrontation Tuesday evening with Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the congressional candidate learned firsthand why disrespecting the 146-year-old civil rights organization had been a really terrible idea.
At first Davis tried to defend his sleazy ad by impugning Carlson’s priorities. Also a terrible idea.
“Being polite has not made our schools any safer,” he said. “If a curse word on TV offends you more than pictures of dead children in Parkland or Newtown, then your priorities are all wrong.”
But the growing outrage over Davis’ ad has little to do with politeness and etiquette — and everything to do with basic facts.
Case in point: “How many NRA members have committed mass shootings,” Carlson asked, to which Davis responded by simply skipping over the question and blathering about the gun rights organization’s lobbying efforts.

Repugnant, yes? Instead of apologizing, Davis wound up doubling down by dropping another campaign advertisement May 14. Some would argue this ad was even worse than the original.
“By the time this ad is done, an AR-15 could have fired 150 bullets. That’s why we need to ban assault weapons,” Davis said in the second 15-second ad.

As noted Tuesday evening by Carlson, this was a bold-faced lie!
“You don’t know what you’re talking about. No AR-15 can fire 150 rounds in 15 seconds. That’s untrue, and if you believe it is true, then you’re not qualified to have a conversation about guns. People are laughing at you because you’re ignorant,” he said.
“So I guess my point is if you’re going to take on the NRA and be Mr. tough ‘I Was A Cop’ guy, maybe you should know what you’re talking about, but you don’t,” he added, referencing Davis’ past career as a cop.
“You’re putting something on television that demonstrably wrong, that’s physically impossible, and all of your voters are like, ‘Oh yeah, this guy knows what he’s talking about. He’s a cop.’ But you don’t know, and maybe you should apologize for it.”
Davis tried to rebut this truth bomb by first arguing that he was just trying to get a conversation about guns going and then reverting back to his original non-point point that “politeness is not working so far.”
That was Davis’ third terrible idea. You’re out!
“Oh, it’s not? You know what works? Facts work. Why don’t you get some facts!” Carlson replied before ending the interview.
