FLASHBACK: Here’s how Trump said Bill Clinton should have handled the investigation with Ken Starr

President Donald Trump’s attorneys are in the middle of ongoing negotiations with special counsel Robert Mueller about allowing the FBI to interview the president as part of the Russia investigation.

While Trump has signaled he wants to take the interview, he previously said it was likely a mistake for former President Bill Clinton to not plead the Fifth in Paula Jones’ lawsuit against the then-president. Clinton’s deposition in that lawsuit later led to his impeachment on charges of perjury.

“I’m not even sure that he shouldn’t have just gone in and taken the Fifth; I don’t get along with this man, [independent counsel Kenneth Starr]; he’s a Republican; he’s after me; he’s this; he’s that and just taken the Fifth Amendment,” Trump told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews in a 1998 interview.

“It’s a terrible thing for a president to take the Fifth Amendment, but he probably should have done it. I don’t think he could have done any worse than what’s happened.”

Influential news aggregator Matt Drudge, proprietor of The Drudge Report, first resurfaced Trump’s interview on Thursday.
