College student smears Confederate statue with ink… and ‘her own blood’

A University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student smeared Monday a Confederate statue with ink and allegedly her own blood.

UNC history PhD student Maya Little’s defacement of the school’s Silent Sam statue comes after UNC Chancellor Carol Folt stated that a state law forbids the school from taking it down, reported WUNC.

While a police officer wrote Little up, fellow protesters began shouting “no cops, no Klan, get rid of Silent Sam!”

“Chancellor Folt, if you refuse to remove the statue, then we will continue to contextualize it,” Little said in a statement directed at the chancellor. “Silent Sam is violence; Silent Sam is the genocide of black people; Silent Sam is antithetical to our right to exist. You should see him the way that we do, at the forefront of our campus covered in our blood.”

Police officers attempted to cordon the monument off with yellow tape, an action which entailed physically moving protesters, who had locked arms in front of it, shouting “hey hey, hey ho, this racist statue’s got to go.”

More than a dozen anonymous UNC professors threatened in February to destroy the monument if it were not taken down in Thursday, stating “we do not fear arrest.”

“A UNC police officer took the individual, who was charged with vandalism, into custody,” UNC media relations manager Randy Young told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “UNC Facilities Services removed the paint from the monument.”
