Surveillance catches pro-baseball player beating girlfriend when he thought no one was watching

Can being a pro athlete get you off the hook for domestic violence?

Minor league outfielder Danry Vasquez was on his way to the big leauges, but was cut from his team after a 2016 video surfaced showing him beating his girlfriend at a Texas stadium, KRIS reports.

In the video, Vasquez was seen suddenly beating the woman in the face as soon as they were alone in the stadium’s stairwell.

He proceeded to pull and drag her down the stairs, after which he continued to hit her. After a few moments, Vasquez exited through the door to the stadium.

The footage then cut, showing them together again walking down the next flight of stairs, when Vasquez again hit the woman without warning, sending her against the wall and to the floor.

At the time, Vasquez was playing for the Minor League Corpus Christi Hooks and was a serious prospect for the affiliated Houston Astros. He had since moved on to the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, but was fired after the video went viral, TMZ reports.

“There is no choice but to sever the relationship. Neither I, nor the Barnstormers’ organization as a whole, can condone or associate with that behavior,” Barnstormers Manager Ross Peoples said.

Vasquez was arrested for domestic violence in Texas in 2016, but his girlfriend did not want to cooperate with prosecutors.

The charges resulted in Vasquez’s release from the Hooks and indefinite suspension from Major League Baseball, prompting his switch to the Atlantic League.

Ultimately, the 24-year-old Venezuelan baseball player was put on probation and made to undergo anger management therapy. The case was formally dropped on March 6.

“At that point, probation checked with us, and he had done everything we asked him to do so I was forced to dismiss the case.”
