Trump sells troops on creating a new military branch, but that’s not what made them roar the most

President Trump was enthusiastically applauded by Marines on Tuesday.

The president delivered a speech at the Marine Corps. Air Station in Miramar as part of his trip to California, telling members of the armed services that he has proposed the creation of a military ‘Space Force,’ as well as taking a moment to mock the ‘fake news’ media–to thunderous applause.

“In space, the United States is going to do Col. [John] Glenn proud,” President Trump asserted. “We are finally going to lead again. You see what’s happening, you see the rockets going up left and right. You haven’t seen that for a long time.”

“Very soon, we’re going to Mars. You wouldn’t have been going to Mars if my opponent won. That I can tell you. You wouldn’t even be thinking about it. ”

The comment elicited a burst of laughter and clapping from the audience.

The president then spoke about a possible new branch of the armed forces dedicated to space.

“My new national strategy for space recognizes that space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea.

“We may even have a ‘Space Force.’ Develop another one. Space Force. We have the Air Force. We’ll have the Space Force. We have the Army, the Navy.

“You know, I was saying the other day, ’cause we’re doing a tremendous amount of work in space, I said ‘Maybe we need a new force. We’ll call it the Space Force.’ And I was not really serious, and then I said ‘What a great idea!'”

As President Trump continued, he turned his attention to the members of the press in attendance.

“That could be the big breaking story. Look at all those people back there [pointing to reporters], look at that. Ah, that fake news!”

The crowd of troops gave the remark enormous applause and loud cheers, prompting the president to pause his speech for a prolonged moment.

“They know,” he added, pointing to the troops. “They understand.”

President Trump closed with a lamentation that the US is “behind” in space technology, but an assurance that ground is rapidly being gained under his presidency.
