As President Trump prepares for a historic in-person meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un, the incredulous liberal media is saying “not so fast.”
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders responded sharply on Friday to a question about how the Trump administration will “verify” the possible denuclearization of North Korea.
“How will they verify the denuclearization?” CNN White House correspondent Jeff Zeleny asked.
“That’s something that will be determined through the national security and intelligence community, certainly not something I would read out to you guys from here,” Sanders replied.
The press secretary also criticized previous administrations’ handling of North Korea after Zeleny asked how Trump can be “so confident” he’s making “the right move.”
“Well I think it’s really clear they misplayed it, or we wouldn’t be in the position that we’re in,” Sanders said. “The president wouldn’t be having to clean up the mistakes of the previous three administrations.
“The president is getting promises out of North Korea that haven’t been made in any recent years. And again, we are going to continue the maximum pressure campaign to make sure that they follow through on these commitments.”
Before moving on, Sanders took one more question from Zeleny about whether the president will “staff up” prior to the meeting, given that there is currently no ambassador to North Korea.
“The president has an incredible team surrounding him both from national security advisers, secretary of defense, secretary of state, the intelligence community,” Sanders responded.
“But at the end of the day, the ultimate person to lead that negotiation or that conversation and be at the table will be the president.”
On Thursday, South Korean National Security Adviser Chung Eui-Yong announced that Kim wants to meet with President Trump, and that the American commander-in-chief accepted the offer to a meeting.
The North Korean leader has said he is willing to denuclearize his county if his regime is not threatened.
Regarding the talks, President Trump has said that “great progress” is being made.
