New recording reveals disgraced Broward deputy knew shooter was inside school—and told cops to stay outside

Newly released radio dispatches suggest former Broward Sheriff’s deputy Scot Peterson lied about his handling of last month’s school shooting in Florida.

Peterson, who resigned after it was learned he did not enter Stoneman Douglas High School, was heard in the recording telling fellow officers to stay away from the shooting in the buildings–despite having previously said he believed the shots were coming from outside, the Miami Herald reports.

“Do not approach the 12 or 1300 building, stay at least 500 feet away,” a frantic Peterson was heard saying the audio, released Thursday by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Herald, BSO police instructs deputies to engage active shooters and eliminate the threat.

The recording countered the version of events outlined by Peterson, who said in a statement last month that he didn’t go into the school because he heard shots coming from outside the 1200 building.

The deputy resigned just eight days after the February 14 shooting–in which 14 students and 3 teachers were killed–in order to avoid being suspended without pay.

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said in a press conference last month that the news of Peterson’s inaction made him “devastated, sick to my stomach.”

It was since reported that other deputies also stood down at the shooting, and that they were ordered to do so because they did not have body cameras on them.

Israel has faced pressure to resign over the scandal and for allowing shooter Nikolas Cruz slip under the radar after multiple domestic disturbance-related visits to his home by law enforcement. The sheriff has indicated he will not step down.
