The mainstream media has foregone all pretense of impartiality amid the hysteria over gun control after last week’s shooting at a Florida high school that claimed the lives of 17 people.
With rational-minded Americans already leery of fake news, CBS News ran with a dubious claim on social media about gun laws in Florida and was quickly called out for the “completely false” assertion.
“In Florida, it’s easier to buy an assault rifle than it is to obtain cold medicine,” read a tweet on CBS News’ Twitter account.

Update: As is typical for the mainstream media, the tweet was removed with a non-correction correction.

However, as one could easily predict, the erroneous story is still alive and well on CBS News’ website.
One of those who corrected CBS News was Townhall editor and Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich with a simple two word reply: “Completely false.”

Former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino also weighed in with his own experiences in the Sunshine State.
“Is it really? Because I’m a former Secret Service agent & a former police officer with an HR 218 permit &, without a FL concealed carry license I had to wait a week to pick up my handgun. Yet, I walked out of the drug store with my Allegra the same day,” he tweeted.

For one thing, words matter.
CBS News referred to “assault rifles” and as The Washington Free Beacon’s Stephen Gutowski pointed out, these weapons were outlawed long ago.
Gutowski tweeted: “This is completely false. New civilian sales of assault rifles, which are fully-automatic, have been outlawed since 1986. Beyond that, every new gun sold anywhere in America requires an FBI background check,” .

And that was just the beginning of a parade of social media users schooling CBS News over the false claim.

Someone came up with this concept, someone approved it, someone wrote the video, someone made the video, and then someone posted the video, all of whom I assume did so with a straight face. https://t.co/Y0kDcm9nII
