GOP now leads on the generic ballot as President Trump’s approval moves up

As Democrats go full throttle against President Trump, their 2018 midterm prospects are getting dimmer.

A POLITICO/Morning Consult poll from late Tuesday revealed that Republicans have overtaken Democrats on the generic congressional ballot. President Trump’s approval also went up, now equaling his disapproval numbers.

According to the poll, 39 percent of registered voters said they will vote for their district’s Republican candidate, versus 38 those who said they will vote Democrat.

Nearly a fourth of voters–23 percent–remained undecided.

The figures showed an electorate split along party lines. Democrats favor their own party’s candidates 85 to 5 percent, while Republicans tow the party line 84 to 8.

Prior to the new poll, the GOP for months trailed Democrats by between 2 and 10 points. The latest RealClearPolitics average of major polls still gives Democrats a nearly seven-point lead, but it’s down from a 13-point high last year.

The new poll also showed that more voters approve of the job President Trump is doing. His approval and disapproval numbers are now tied at 47 percent each.

The economy is a strong point for Republicans. In December, 39 percent of voters trusted Democrats on the economy while 38 percent sided with the GOP.

Now, 43 percent say Republicans are better equipped to handle the economy, while only 32 percent believe Democrats are.

Even Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) popularity has grown. Among voters, 36 percent view the House Speaker favorably and 40 percent unfavorably.

Meanwhile, 28 percent have a favorable impression of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and nearly half (49 percent) view her in an unfavorable light.

The change in public perception comes as the GOP tax reform bill takes effect. Hundreds of companies have responded to the legislation’s corporate tax cuts by giving workers higher wages, increased 401(k) and pension contributions, and bonuses as high as $3,000.

President Trump has expressed willingness to work together with Democrats, urging Congress to extend legal status and a pathway to citizenship for illegal alien “Dreamers” in exchange for immigration reform. He has also proposed a bipartisan trillion-dollar infrastructure program.

If Democrats choose not to work with the President, they may see their approval dip further.
