Leave it to MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough to hysterically overreact to anything remotely controversial that President Trump says.
During a Monday afternoon speech in Cincinnati, Trump brought up the “T” word to describe Democrats who refused to react to even the most positive of news during last week’s State of the Union speech.
“They were like death and un-American. Un-American,” Trump said. “Somebody said, ‘treasonous.’ I mean, yeah, I guess why not? Can we call that treason? Why not? I mean they certainly didn’t seem to love our country that much.”
Except, watch the actual delivery and it’ll be obvious Trump was just speaking in his typical, hyperbolic way. It was more a lighthearted jab meant for laughs than an actual criminal indictment.
But to Scarborough, Trump’s words could lead “unhinged followers” to act out, or something. Check out this Tuesday “Morning Joe” conversation with Random House executive editor, Jon Meacham:
“Yesterday the President suggested the Democrats were treasonous for not standing when he was at the State of the Union,” said the MSNBC host before mentioning the fact that Democrats have often tossed the same accusations at Republicans.
“But it is highly unusual for the president of the United States in his office to suggest that the opposing party is treasonous because they do whatever the opposing party has done at State of the Unions for as long as there have been State of the Unions,” Scarborough said.
“The way you set it up is perfect,” Meacham said. “Because basically, look at the early 1960s, you had in Dallas John Birchers, one-world anti-U.N. conspirators, attacking Adlai Stevenson. You had them spitting on Lady Bird Johnson. That was the rabble, that was – even then – the extreme and outside the mainstream. Here’s the president of the United States practicing, speaking in the language of what Richard Hofstetter called the paranoid style.”
“You have a president of the United States that is using the word ‘treason’ which is punishable by death under the U.S. Code,” Scarborough said. “And obviously there are fears of what that may lead some of his more unhinged followers to do.”
The MSNBC host did acknowledge the “unhinged followers on both sides of the political aisle,” but was quick to get back to Trump.
“There are unhinged followers on both sides of the political aisle. This is not just about people who support Donald Trump. But there are people that have no guard rails and they hear this from a leader and violence can happen. It’s just like when he calls the media enemies of the people or when he suggests that congressmen must be stopped. ‘Must be stopped,’ I think that was in a tweet yesterday. Only a couple of months after an unhinged liberal shot the Republican majority whip.”
Of course, Democrats have been playing this game for years, but everyone is angry at Trump. National Review’s Dan McLaughlin writes:
I agree that it’s worse for the president to do it. I don’t agree that it’s totally irrelevant or easily forgiven for others to do so – especially since the others in this case included not just Democratic Congressional leadership, Vice President Biden (a repeat offender), and presidential candidate (and later nominee) Hillary Clinton, but also the White House Press Secretary and many leading members and spokesmen from Obama’s presidential campaign team (Axelrod, Messina, Plouffe). The idea that Democrats – including Democrats whose job was literally to act as spokespeople for Obama – retailed this stuff for years without Obama having any knowledge or approval of it is ridiculous, and particularly risible coming from the same sorts of liberals who are constantly demanding that all Republicans be held responsible for every last thing said by obscure state legislative candidates – yet, they can walk away from statements made by their own Senate Majority Leader, House Whip, current Senate Minority Leader, the Governor of New York, etc.
