Discipline is good, but some parents can take it too far.
A family dispute turned into a viral phenomenon after an Ohio mother shared photos on Facebook of her daughter who was allegedly forced to cut her hair by her father and stepmother as punishment for getting highlights.
“This is what my daughter looked like Sunday when I took her home and the other two pics is what happened today before she was brought to me… all over me having highlights put in her hair for her birthday!” the girl’s mother, Christin Johnson, wrote last week.
Accompanying the post were before and after pictures of her daughter’s hair.
Haskins Police and Wood County Children’s Services are investigating a potential child abuse complaint, Fox 8 reported.
“I’ve been doing this since ’92 and I’ve never had a case I would say that’s like this,”Haskins Police Chief Colby Carroll said. “Mom was upset with how her child was being cared for — lack of better terms.”
The father and stepmother of the girl, identified as Kelsey in Facebook posts, are volunteer firefighters with the Middleton Township Fire Department.
Chief Steve Asmus told Fox 8 the couple will be on leave until the investigation is concluded, and that he had never received a complaint regarding their work during the two years they served the department.
No charges have been filed against either party.
One blogger called the father a “lunatic” over the incident.
A few days after her original post, Johnson shared photos of her daughter trying on a wig at a local hair salon.
The mother also created a Facebook page titled “Team Kelsey,” using it to promote a fundraiser for her daughter. According to Johnson’s posts, the fundraiser was shut down by Facebook.
Did the girl’s father go overboard?
Twitter users sure thought so.
This girl did not deserve to have all her hair cut off as punishment 4 getting highlights as a B-day present from her mom. Divorce is bad enough but this dad & step-mom took it too far. Now suspended from their jobs & police investigation. How humiliating. https://t.co/9ia7ZXGLB4

All those cracking jokes on here, it was a spiteful a**hole thing to do which obviously hurt his daughter, that’s emotional abuse. Think about that.
