A candidate for governor in Illinois launched a politically incorrect ad targeting fellow Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner for his arguably progressive policies.
Borrowing from President Donald Trump’s blunt mannerisms, the ad highlights issues such as transgender rights, sanctuary cities and state-funded abortions.
…the trouble is, being Trump only seems to work for Trump.
The ad from state Rep. Jeanne Ives features a man dressed as a woman thanking Gov. Rauner for allowing him to use the bathroom of his choice, a man wear a bandanna across his face thanking the governor for making Illinois “a sanctuary state for illegal immigrant criminals,” and a woman thanking him “for making all Illinois families pay for my abortion.”
Ives defended the ad Monday while speaking at the City Club of Chicago, saying it’s “generating the expected hysteria from the expected quarters,” adding that the ad is “an accurate depiction of the policies Rauner put in place,” according to the Chicago Tribune.
“The commercial does not attack people, it tackles issues, I truly believe illustrating the constituencies Rauner has chosen to serve, to the exclusion of others,” Ives said.
The lawmaker also took to Twitter to defend the spot, tweeting: “The commercial is a visual representation of the policies #Rauner put into place.”

Needless to say, the spot didn’t go over well on the left, but Republicans too rushed to denounce it.
The “Thank you, Bruce Rauner” ad is scheduled to start airing on Saturday, but Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider called on Ives to take it down, according to the Chicago Tribune.
“There is no place in the Illinois Republican Party for rhetoric that attacks our fellow Illinoisans based on their race, gender or humanity,” Schneider said in a statement.
“Rep. Ives’ campaign ad does not reflect who we are as the Party of Lincoln and as proud residents of our great and diverse state,” he added. “She should pull down the ad and immediately apologize to the Illinoisans who were negatively portrayed in a cowardly attempt to stoke political division.”
If only Republicans attacked the left for efforts “to stoke political division” the way they do fellow Republicans.
Ives was set upon on social media for being homophobic, a racist, and a bigot, with the Democratic Party of Illinois, which had the audacity to complain about Ives “pitting Americans against each other,” leading the charge:

But not all responses where negative, as seen in a tweet from one social media user.
