Was McCabe feeling the heat?
FBI Director Christopher Wray sent a message to all bureau employees on Monday night regarding Deputy Director Andrew McCabe’s surprise resignation. Wray’s email insinuated the departure was related to a forthcoming Inspector General report that examines the FBI’s conduct during the 2016 presidential election.
“It would be inappropriate for me to comment on specific aspects of the IG’s review right now,” Wray wrote in a copy of the message obtained by NBC News.
“But I can assure you that I remain staunchly committed to doing this job, in every respect, ‘by the book.’ I will not be swayed by political or other pressure in my decision making.”
In the next paragraph, Wray mentioned McCabe’s intention to retire, suggesting a connection between the IG report and the deputy director’s decision to step down before his planned retirement in March of this year.
Sources close to the matter told NBC News McCabe reached his decision following a meeting with Wray in which the topic of the IG investigation was discussed.
The Inspector General’s office is examining the FBI’s handling of the Hillary Clinton private email server case, and whether bias at the Bureau affected the probe’s conclusion.
Despite suspicion that President Trump pressured McCabe to resign, FBI insiders maintained the president was not involved in the decision–echoing the White House position.
McCabe has faced scrutiny for potential pro-Clinton bias at the FBI under his watch.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Deputy Director’s wife, Jill McCabe, launched a Senate bid as a Democrat in Virginia in 2015 and received donations from a political action committee affiliated with former Governor Terry McAuliffe, who has ties to the Clintons.
Is there more to McCabe’s resignation than he’s letting on?
