Finding himself embroiled in a controversy not of his making, actor Mark Wahlberg took decisive action in donating $1.5 million to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund in the name of actress Michelle Williams.
But Williams insisted that the effort “isn’t about me.”
Wahlberg and Williams costar in “All the Money in the World,” and his generous offer was in response to criticism over a gender pay gap for reshoots of the movie.

“Over the last few days my reshoot fee for ‘All the Money in the World’ has become an important topic of conversation,” Wahlberg said in a statement Saturday, according to USA Today. “I 100% support the fight for fair pay and I’m donating the $1.5M to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams’ name.”
The reshoots coming after actor Kevin Spacey was replaced by Christopher Plummer following accusations of sexual misconduct. Wahlberg was paid $1.5 million while his costar was paid an $80 per diem totaling less than $1,000, USA Today reported.

Wahlberg’s contract included a co-star approval clause, according to the newspaper, and he refused to approve Plummer as a replacement unless he was paid the princely sum.
Williams responded to the donation in a statement sent to USA Today by her agent.

“Today isn’t about me,” the actress said. “My fellow actresses stood by me and stood up for me, my activist friends taught me to use my voice, and the most powerful men in charge, they listened and they acted.
“If we truly envision an equal world, it takes equal effort and sacrifice,” she continued. “Today is one of the most indelible days of my life because of Mark Wahlberg, WME and a community of women and men who share in this accomplishment. Anthony Rapp, for all the shoulders you stood on, now we stand on yours.”

The talent agency William Morris Endeavor Entertainment represents both Wahlberg and Williams, and will also make a $500,000 donation to Time’s Up fund in Williams’ name.
