Democrats are really scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Chelsea Manning, the transgender former US Army soldier whose prison sentence for leaking classified documents was famously commuted by Barack Obama, has filed to run for US Senate.
The Federal Election commission website shows a Jan. 11 filing in Maryland for “Chelsea Manning for US Senate,” the Washington Post reported on Saturday.
According to the filing, Manning is registered as a Democrat, suggesting she plans to challenge Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) in the primary.
Manning, then known as Bradley Manning, was arrested in 2010 and convicted in 2013 for using her position as an Army intelligence analyst to leak sensitive information to WikiLeaks.
The polemic figure was originally sentenced to 35 years in prison. Following President Obama’s sentence commutation last January, Manning was released in May.
Since being freed, the former soldier has pursued life as a woman and maintained an active presence on Twitter, often making controversial statements.
On Tuesday, Manning protested Law Enforcement Appreciation Day with by tweeting “F**k the police.”

On Wednesday, Manning called Immigration and Customs Enforcement “the new Gestapo” in response to ICE’s nationwide raids of 7-Eleven convenience stores.
Ben Cardin is Maryland’s senior senator, serving since 2007. He sits on several committees and is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The news of Manning’s candidacy provoked a wave of outrage on Twitter.
