The jury’s out on Rose McGowan.
The polemic actress, who has accused disgraced Hollywood movie producer Harvey Weinstein of raping her, said in a Vanity Fair interview that director Robert Rodriguez manipulated her with knowledge of the alleged incident.
McGowan’s description of Rodriguez conflicted with a scathing Variety op-ed the director wrote about Weinstein in October.
The “Scream” actress said the event occurred during the filming of the 2007 horror film “Grindhouse.” Rodriguez directed the “Planet Terror” segment of the movie. McGowan and Rodriguez were dating at the time, although the director was married.
McGowan claimed that Rodriguez used his “knowledge [of the alleged rape] against [McGowan] as a tool for mind games, starting with a scene in which Tarantino, playing a character in his movie, attacks McGowan’s character.”
The Vanity Fair piece goes on to state, “In what McGowan interpreted as the ultimate act of cruelty, Rodriguez ‘sold our film to my monster.'”
Rodriguez acknowledged that he had McGowan’s past in mind when he cast her in the film, but said his decision was not meant to hurt the actress. According to the filmmaker, he cast McGowan as an act of protest against Weinstein.
“Since the Weinstein’s had a first look at any project of mine or Quentin’s, I knew they’d never let this project go to another studio,” he wrote. “Casting Rose in a leading role in my next movie felt like the right move to make at the time – to literally make him pay.”
Rodriguez continued:
“It felt really good at the time to realize we could use our art form to help Rose right a serious wrong in both how he victimized her years earlier, but also what Harvey was doing to a wonderful actress by blacklisting her and keeping her from working with filmmakers that would have wanted to work with her.”
The director also called McGowan “a very brave woman who I applaud for speaking out about Weinstein’s repulsive behavior.”
Since making her allegations against Harvey Weinstein, McGowan has gotten into spats with a number of celebrities.
The actress blasted Ben Affleck for denying he knew of Weinstein’s alleged misconduct.

McGowan also blasted Meryl Streep after the Oscar-winning actress declared she would wear black to the Golden Globe awards as part of a protest against sexual harassment and assault in Hollywood.
“Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster [Weinstein], are wearing black @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest,” McGowan wrote. “YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly and affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy.”
McGowan is seemingly embattled with the entire world.
