Father allegedly killed 7-year-old over cookie, then ordered children to sleep next to dead brother

Some people are truly bereft of humanity.

A Florida man was charged with first-degree murder after he allegedly threw his 7-year-old stepson against the wall and then beat him to death with his bare hands.

Jack Junior Montgomery was staying with 7-year-old Brice Russell and his three siblings at a Masters Inn hotel in Seffner, WFTS reports. The children’s mother, Donya Shenita Russell, was at work.

Employees at the hotel called law enforcement to report loud yelling coming from Montgomery’s room, which sounded like an adult male saying “beat the kid” and “push the kid over here.”

On Saturday, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to conduct a welfare search. Authorities met Jack, who claimed the loud noise was his music. He opened the door so the deputy could see the children lying in bed, after which the officer left without further investigation.

Later that day, Montgomery called 911, saying his son would not wake up. Fire rescue crews arrived on the scene and found Brice cold-to-the-touch. The boy was pronounced dead at 10:59 am.

The three siblings told investigators they witnessed their stepfather hitting Brice and throwing him around the room in the middle of the night. Montgomery allegedly threatened to harm the children if they did not strike their brother.

The siblings said Montgomery threw Brice against the wall, a blow from which he did not wake up. After, he put the boy back in bed, instructing his siblings to sleep beside him. The Sheriff’s Department determined that Montgomery hit the child in his face, stomach, and mouth with a closed fist.

The step father told authorities he threw Brice onto the bed after he caught the boy sneaking out of bed to get a cookie. He claimed Brice hit his head on a headboard, but the injury was not serious.

Montgomery was arrested on Sunday and charged with aggravated child abuse and felony first-degree murder.
