CNN allows reporter to hype false claim about who paid for the dossier … again

Apparently, CNN buys into the belief that repeating something often enough makes it true.

CNN justice correspondent Evan Perez falsely told viewers on Tuesday that Republicans were the original financial backers of the largely unverified Trump-Russia dossier.

Perez’ was responding to an early-morning Tuesday tweet from the president, in which he called the dossier “bogus” and a “pile of garbage.”

The CNN correspondent described the dossier as being “first paid for by Republicans.”

Look, the fact is that the dossier was compiled as part of opposition research, first paid for by Republicans who were opposed to Donald Trump and then later on by Democrats and the Clinton camp, people associated with the Clinton campaign who wanted to try to bring him down.”

Perez acknowledged that the dossier formed the “basis” of the investigation into Trump campaign’s alleged dealings with Russia, but failed to note that FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said most of the dossier remains unverified.

“The underlying thesis of the dossier is this: that Russia was trying to use connections with the Donald Trump campaign, people inside the Trump campaign and associated with the Trump campaign, to try to use that to have some influence. And that … is something the intelligence community was very much concerned about. They took it very seriously, and it has formed the basis for this investigation.”

Senior leadership at the conservative Washington Free Beacon paid Fussion GPS, the firm behind the dossier, to provide opposition research on Donald Trump.

The project that began with Free Beacon financing was later picked up by the DNC and Clinton campaign, and led to the creation of the dossier by former MI6 agent Christopher Steele.

The dossier itself was not made while conservatives contracted Fusion GPS. The Free Beacon noted: “none of the work product that the Free Beacon received appears in the Steele dossier.”

CNN has promoted the claim of Republicans’ involvement in the dossier before. In October, “Situation Room” host Wolf Blitzer said “both sides had a hand” in it.

CNN failed to disclose its ties to Fusion GPS, particularly those of Evan Perez. The Daily Caller found that the justice correspondent worked at the Wall Street Journal at the same time as Fusion GPS’s founders–and even authored stories with co-founder Glenn Simpson.

For CNN, the facts seemingly don’t matter when there’s an agenda to promote.
