The former head of the Office of Government Ethics called President Donald Trump a “wannabe autocrat” Sunday for sharing a tweet mocking CNN.
“The wannabe autocrat just retweeted an image depicting CNN’s blood on the sole of his shoe,” Walter Shaub, an Obama-era appointee who left his position earlier in 2017, tweeted Sunday morning. He is a frequent critic of Trump’s Twitter behavior.

“These colicky tweets reveal he’s hurting this weekend. They make him (and our country) look weak,” Shaub wrote, referring to the president’s decision to share a response to a Saturday tweet about his accomplishments.
The tweet is of an image of Trump in a limousine with the text “WINNING” scrawled at the top and a smudge on the sole of his shoe with the letters “CNN” etched into it.
The president received waves of criticism in July when he tweeted a doctored video showing him clothes-lining “fraud news” CNN in a fake wrestling match. Many Trump supporters reacted to the video with humor, but the network at the butt of the joke eventually launched an investigation into the person who created the video.
Trump’s Saturday night retweet comes at a particularly difficult time for CNN, which was roundly criticized in December for publishing a series of incorrect reports. One of the reports erroneously asserted Donald Trump Jr. received advance notice from WikiLeaks about hacked documents set to be released during the election.
