Meghan Markle fanatics go bonkers as royalty spotted wearing ‘racist’ brooch

Fans of Meghan Markle, Prince Harry’s wife-to-be, had their knickers in a twist over a “racist” brooch worn by Princess Michael of Kent.

Kent, dubbed “Princess Pushy,” is first cousin to Queen Elizabeth and she showed up at a royal Christmas lunch on Wednesday rocking a blackamoor brooch depicting the bust of a black man wearing a gold headdress and robe.

The Buckingham Palace event, hosted by the Queen, “was the first major event for Markle, who is bi-racial, to meet and greet with the extended royal family,” Fox News reported.

Blackamoor art and jewelry originated in Venice in the 16th century and is considered racially insensitive because of the exotic images featuring slaves and servants.

The Guardian reported that Markle and Princess Michael are believed to have met at the lunch, but “it is not known if she was wearing the brooch at the time.”

So, did Princess Michael think it through, or was there a subtle message in her choice of jewelry?

In response to the controversy, the princess said in a statement that she intended no harm.

“The brooch was a gift and has been worn many times before. Princess Michael is very sorry and distressed that it has caused offence,” a spokesman for the princess said.

Working against her claim is that Princess Michael has been accused of racism before.

The New York Times reported in 2004 that while dining at a New York restaurant, the princess “exploded in a decidedly unroyal pique at a table of noisy diners.”

According to the diners, Princess Michael exhorted them to ”go back to the colonies.”

In her own defense, the princess told The New York Post that she told the diners, “You should remember the colonies.”  The message intended to remind the diners of a time when people had manners.
