Sen. elect Doug Jones rebuffs Dems: Voters settled Trump sex allegations, I don’t think he ought to resign

Democrat Alabama Sen. Elect Doug Jones signaled on Saturday that he will not walk lockstep with the fervent anti-Trump wing of his party.

Jones won the hotly contested senatorial election against the controversial Roy Jones in a stunner last week and, if he wants to hang onto to his spot in the senate for more than one shortened term, he will need to govern moderately.

That could be why on Saturday, when he appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” he did not take the bait from host Jake Tapper, who showed a clip of New Jersey Democrat Sen. Cory Booker calling for the president’s resignation because of old sexual misconduct allegations against him, and asked Jones if he agreed.

“Where I am on that right now is that those allegations were made before the election and so people had an opportunity to judge before the election. I think we need to move on and not be distracted by those issues,” he said. “I don’t think the president ought to resign at this point.”

But Tapper pressed on and asked why Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn. should resign and not President Trump.

“Again, I go back to the fact that those allegations were made and he was elected President of the United States and I think the American people spoke on that,” he said, adding again that “We need to move on.”

Jones’ comments were in line with the White House’s position on the matter, as articulated by Press Secretary Sarah Sanders who told reporters on Monday that “The people of this country, at a decisive election, supported President Trump, and we feel like these allegations have been answered through that process.”
