The avalanche of inappropriate sexual conduct allegations continues to pile up for 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Alex Kozinski, as nine more women have officially come forward to add their voices to the other former colleagues, interns, law clerks and even acquaintances who have already gone on record against the judge.
On Friday, the Washington Post reported the additional accusations, which included lewd comments and inappropriate touching spanning decades.
University of California, Irvine, law professor Leah Litman told the Post that, before a panel appearance together last July, Kozinski pinched her side and leg at a restaurant and talked about how he had just had sex.
Retired U.S. Court of Federal Claims judge Christine Miller described a 1986 car ride during which Kozinski allegedly grabbed her breasts after she declined his offer to visit a motel to have sex.
An unidentified lawyer was reportedly alone at a legal event in 2008 when Kozinski gave her an unwanted and unasked for kiss and a bear hug. Her husband confirmed the incident to the Post and said they didn’t think they had recourse because of Kozinski’s position.
Kozinski, a Reagan appointee who served as the 9th Circuit’s chief judge from 2007 to 2014, issued a statement insisting that not all of the allegations are true and that he regretted that his “unusual sense of humor caused offense or made anyone uncomfortable.”
“I have always tried to treat my male and female clerks the same,” Kozinski said.
Just last week, six former junior staff members and clerks accused the judge of various inappropriate behavior that included showing them pornography.
One of them, former clerk Heidi Bond, currently a novelist who goes by the name Courtney Milan, told the Post that her former boss bragged about his sexual exploits in college and showed her pornography in his chambers three times from 2006 to 2007 while she was a clerk for him.
A misconduct inquiry into the judge’s actions has been opened by the 9th Circuit and transferred on Friday to the Judicial Council of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York.
