Why people are mistakenly tweeting ‘RIP Charles Manson’

Any day a heinous mass murderer leaves planet Earth is a good day, but the death of Charles Manson late Sunday elicited a curious reaction on social media.

In response to the news that the wild-eyed leader of the so-called “Manson Family,” a murderous cult that killed actress Sharon Tate and six others in 1969, passed away at the age of 83, some social media users began tweeting “RIP Charles Manson” to pay their respects to the charismatic lunatic.

And while there’s going to be that fringe element that gains great satisfaction from a macabre tribute to the convicted murderer, it became clear that folks were mistaking Charles Manson for the singer Marilyn Manson.

…proving that being able to use a smart phone doesn’t necessarily ensure intelligence.

It’s hard to fathom that people are serious, that their tweets are not attempts at satire, but they appear to be genuine:

For what it’s worth, Marilyn Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, explained in his autobiography, “The Long Hard Road Out of Hell,” that his stage name is a play on Charles Manson.

Referring to a “balance between good and evil,” he said: “Marilyn Monroe had a dark side just as Charles Manson has a good, intelligent side,” he wrote.

Marilyn Manson did a cover of a song written by Charlie, “Sick City.”
