Julia Roberts reveals the key to being gorgeous at 50 and why she stays away from social media

For an elite star in an industry full of self-indulgent narcissists, Julia Roberts is surprisingly well grounded.

During an interview with Stellar magazine, the 50-year-old actress revealed what very well could be a key reason why: the fact that she doesn’t do social media, because of an aversion to the “narcissistic practice of the selfie.”

“We have become a culture that’s so self-examining and so self-promoting that it just becomes too overwhelming,” Roberts said. “Maybe less self-examination is the key to being gorgeous.”

And gorgeous she is. Even coming from her lips, the adjective doesn’t sound like braggadocio, more like the sun describing itself as bright or the sky saying it’s blue.

The “Pretty Woman” star, whose varied, decades-long career has made her one of Hollywood’s most beloved actresses, also shared some “simple” ways she’s been able to keep herself looking young.

When it comes to skin care, “water is everything,” according to Roberts.

“And sleep, which is impossible for most mums, of course. And to find that sense of joy. When I’m grumpy, my eyes are super puffy,” said the mother-of-three.

Like most Hollywood stars, Roberts has political views that lean left, but she has also acknowledged the fact that most people want their movie stars to act, not drive a political agenda.

“People do care what celebrities think, but it’s a such a hollow care. I’ve seen actors on TV start talking about their politics or religion, and I just think, you’re putting me off. I don’t need to know every little thing. People don’t really want to know. It’s nice if you don’t have all those little voices in the back of your head when you’re watching somebody in a movie,” Roberts told OK! magazine in 2008.
