About 3 hours after news of a mass shooting in the small town of Sutherland Springs, Texas was reported, alleged comedian Chelsea Handler was blaming Republicans for the tragedy. She wasn’t the only one, but her comments went viral fast.
“Innocent people go to church on Sunday to honor their God, and while doing so, get shot in killed. What country? America. Why? Republicans,” she wrote.
Handler was destroyed on social media for her comments.
WoW❗️@chelseahandler is already making the #sutherlandshooting about Politics. Blaming it on Republicans⁉️ pic.twitter.com/llMoRCz1iF

This is so utterly ridiculous I don’t even think you believe it. Wow. https://t.co/EnvZNtKv9N

This woman is insane. https://t.co/RZKlgMivNn

Republicans? You’re blaming an entire party for the actions of an individual? With that logic, you should blame all Democrats for slavery. https://t.co/wHd9hpllGD
— Ryan Fournier (@RyanAFournier) November 5, 2017
This woman is reprehensible.
(BTW: The Deplorables comment didn’t work last year. It still doesn’t). https://t.co/18zCuJjJca

You are a piece of work @chelseahandler first off there’s only one God. Secondly republicans aren’t to blame. Radials/Extremists are https://t.co/VGwZb2sz0C
— KAYA (@KayaJones) November 6, 2017
#NotAllMuslims are to blame for terror, but all Republicans are to blame for one guy shooting up a church full of mostly white Republicans. https://t.co/PVn6w5Zyjj

I really try to find the best in people and not add to the hate, but you are vile. https://t.co/RDKM58yCNs

I️ normally try very hard not to call attention to this stuff in the middle of tragedies but this is obscene stuff that gets people killed. https://t.co/3jNMUEFtcL

But Handler was far from the only one to attempt to politicize the death of dozens of innocent churchgoers on Saturday.
Not to be outdone, former President Barack Obama started with thoughts for the victims.
“We grieve with all the families in Sutherland Springs harmed by this act of hatred, and we’ll stand with the survivors as they recover…,” he wrote.

But he could not leave it at that. The man who was president for eight years, had more to say.
“May God also grant all of us the wisdom to ask what concrete steps we can take to reduce the violence and weaponry in our midst,” he said.

Conservative actor James Woods hit him with stone cold truth.
“Ask your boss #GeorgeSoros to stop financing #Antifa terrorism?” Woods fired back.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren took a more pointed approach, making a bee-line for the NRA.
I’m heartsick for the victims, families & community of Sutherland Springs. But I’m more than heartsick – I’m angry.
— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) November 5, 2017
How many more people must die at churches or concerts or schools before we stop letting the @NRA control this country’s gun policies?
— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) November 5, 2017
How many kids must die of gun violence on playgrounds & streets every day with no attention at all before we wake up to what’s happening?
— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) November 5, 2017
Many kids die in Chicago, with the strictest gun control in America.
Thoughts & prayers are not enough, GOP. We must end this violence. We must stop these tragedies. People are dying while you wait.
— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) November 5, 2017
Lady Gaga prayed for gun control.
Prayers for #SanAntonio and all the families who are suffering the loss of loved ones. I’ll pray also for #GunControl
— Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) November 5, 2017
She was joined by a plethora of celebrities using the same talking points.
How many more have to die before we enact sane gun control laws?

When a plane crashes, air travel becomes exponentially safer bc of the lessons learned. But 1 mass shooting after another…nothing.

— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) November 5, 2017
Where’s the next mass shooting gonna be? Any guesses? Should we try to do anything we can to prevent it? No? Ok cool. Good luck out there!

Are the bodies of the Vegas massacre cold enough for you yet or is it still ‘too soon’ to discuss gun control? https://t.co/OCTd8cBIGq
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) November 5, 2017
Mass carnage in Sutherland Springs.
We can do better than this.
The idea of zero new gun safety laws isn’t just idiotic it’s murderous.— Adam McKay (@GhostPanther) November 5, 2017
CONGRESS- the Horror of #SutherlandSprings is on YOU. BAN #gunstocks NOW. Las Vegas was basically Yesterday! Shameful, complicit,no excuses.
— Debra Messing (@DebraMessing) November 5, 2017
And some believe the NRA is a terrorist group, but not Antifa.
.@nra you are a terrorist organization. you aid, abet, and protect terrorists.
— Timothy Simons (@timothycsimons) November 5, 2017
The @NRA is a terrorist group who control congress with $$$. Nothing will change until that stops.
