The Justice Department has identified six Russian hackers it says hacked the Democrat National Committee during the 2016 presidential race and leaked information.
The DOJ has not given details regarding the individuals responsible for the hacking but have enough evidence to bring charges to the individuals it believes are responsible next year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
If charges are brought by federal prosecutors it would name, directly, the individuals in the Russian military and intelligence community involved in obtaining, and leaking to WikiLeaks, the campaign emails from the account of John Podesta, who headed Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
Secureworks, a cyber security company, discovered that the hackers, a group known as Fancy Bear, had a “hit list” of perceived enemies of the Russian government that included former Secretary of State John Kerry, half of the Russian pop band Pussy Riot, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and others, according to data it provided to the Associated Press.
According to the AP, Fancy Bear targeted “workers for defense contractors such as Boeing, Raytheon, and Lockheed Martin or senior intelligence figures, prominent Russia watchers and — especially — Democrats.”
“More than 130 party workers, campaign staffers and supporters of the party were targeted, including Podesta and other members of Clinton’s inner circle. The AP also found a handful of Republican targets,” it said.
