Joy Reid and her liberal buddies think it’s hilarious to make fun of ‘working class whites’

Political observers contribute Hillary Clinton’s surprise 2016 election loss to her failure to effectively court working class white voters in crucial battleground states like Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

But controversial new comments from liberal media icon Joy Reid suggest Democrats are still not interested in reaching out to blue-collar whites.

In a panel for her MSNBC program Morning Joy, Reid and guest Eric Boehlert, a writer for liberal outlet Shareblue Media, unabashedly laughed at working class whites–whom they accuse of enabling the “racism” of Donald Trump.

Their discussion revolved around the idea that the American press should be more critical of the voters who put President Trump in office. Boehlert, who has previously worked for Media Matters and Salon, told Reid:

“Not only doesn’t the press want to call voters out, they want to, you know, hold them up as kind of virtuous. How many New York Times stories have we read about the white rust belt voters. They’ve written 15 profiles since January. Never once do they ask ‘Isn’t Trump racist? Why did you vote for a racist?'”

Boehlert argued that the press’ treatment of Trump voters is “dangerous.” He called for greater media scrutiny of conservative Americans, saying “not only are they not asking questions, they’re whitewashing this stuff in a dangerous way.”

Reid, who agreed with the writer’s assessment, made a joke about the working class, ridiculing the financial distress faced by many citizens in the Rust Belt.

“Getty images is probably sold out of ‘working class white voter stares longingly out window,’ Reid said. That photo is sold out.” The host and guest erupted in laughter.

This isn’t the first time Reid has been dismissive of the plight of blue-collar workers. Following Steve Bannon’s appearance on 60 Minutes, Reid took aim at the “economic nationalism” of Bannon and Trump–which seeks to restore America’s industrial sector and create jobs for laid-off factory workers.

And after intelligence analyst Sebastian Gorka left the Trump administration last month, Reid took to Twitter to make a widely criticized joke referencing Nazis.

Many Twitter users found the MSNBC pundit’s hashtag offensive.

Reid’s take on the white working class mirrors the rhetoric of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Clinton famously vowed to “put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business,” despite the importance of the mining industry to blue-collar voters in places like Pennsylvania–a long-time blue state Clinton ultimately lost.

Clinton did what Reid and Boehlert call for–going after Republican voters themselves. The failed presidential candidate made headlines when she called Trump supporters “deplorables.”

It was a move that cost her the election. It appears that rather than learning from their mistakes, Democrats prefer to double down on them.
