Rock band U2 has had to cancel its concert scheduled for Saturday night in St. Louis because of protests over the acquittal of a police officer in the shooting death of a black man.
“We have been informed by the St. Louis Police Department that they are not in a position to provide the standard protection for our audience as would be expected for an event of this size,” the band said in a statement on its website.
“We have also been informed that local crowd security personnel would not be at full capacity,” the statement read. “In light of this information, we cannot in good conscience risk our fans’ safety by proceeding with tonight’s concert. As much as we regret having to cancel, we feel it is the only acceptable course of action in the current environment.”

Protests broke out in the River City after former Officer Jason Stockley was acquitted in the killing of Anthony Lamar Smith, who ran from police and led them on a chase.
The protests became violent – some attacking the mayor’s house and other carrying firearms as they took to the streets.

Fans who purchased tickets to the concert, that was to be held at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis will get a full refund.
