Do as we say, not as we do.
MSNBC’s Alex Witt lost it when a windsurfer suddenly appeared in the background as she was getting a Hurricane Irma update from reporter Mariana Atencio as SHE stood on the beach in Miami.
Atcensio was explaining that the winds were picking up and that the storm surge would soon be approaching when the windsurfer came shooting by.
“Mariana, before you get reporting, is that somebody kite-surfing behind you? a stunned Witt interjected. “Oh, come on!”
“That’s exactly what I wanted to show you, Alex” Atencio replied. “This is not the scene that officials here, first responders want to be looking at. Because the storm has shifted slightly west, you’re starting to see people here in Miami Beach — which is under a mandatory evacuation order — doing water sports.”
Overlooking the reality that she TOO was standing on the beach in the middle of a major storm, the reporter proceeded to chastise a number of onlookers.
“There are onlookers taking photos, there are also about a dozen people in front of me,” Atencio said. “It’s a similar scene over on the other side. This is not, again, what the mayor of Miami Beach who called this a ‘nuclear hurricane,’ wants to be seeing right now.”
Witt asked if there was any police presence there.
“Right now, on this stretch of the beach, I’m not seeing any police around,” Atencio said. “But I have seen them on every corner of Miami Beach.”
We get it that reporters are doing their job to inform the public — and drive ratings — and that windsurfing during an impending hurricane is not the smartest thing to do, but where does the media get this notion that they somehow play by different rules than the rest of us?
