The obsession over anything Confederate has now invaded the northern state of New Jersey.
Parker Space, a state assemblyman, is about as Southern as one can get in the Garden State.
He’s a farmer, a Country music lover and owns a groundhog named Stonewall Jackson. The fifth Stonewall Jackson groundhog on his farm, Fred Space, began naming them for the Confederate general around 25 years ago, the New York Post reported.
Last week, the assemblyman found himself in hot water with the left when he shared a photo on Facebook of himself and his wife standing in front of the Confederate flag.
On the flag was the superimposed face of Hank Williams Jr. with the lyrics “If the South would’ve won, we would’ve had it made.”
“Tailgating waiting for Hank. Hope no one is offended! Lol,” he wrote in the caption of the photo that was taken at a concert featuring Williams Jr. and Lnyrd Skynyrd.
“It could have said anything on the flag,” Space told the Post. “I got the picture, because I thought it looked cool with Hank on it.”
But his political opponents and detractors took advantage of the photo, and is groundhog’s name, as quickly as they could.
Something Space found ridiculous.
“I think it’s ridiculous they are making a big deal out of a groundhog,” Space told the Post.
“I think the Confederate flag is part of history,” Space aid. “I live in Beemerville, New Jersey. Every once in a while you see kids with a flag on their truck.
“I am sorry if you don’t understand our sense of humor,” he added. “Maybe you have to bale hay to get it.”
Space has not removed the photo and appears to have no intention to do so.
“I’m not a politically correct person,” he said. “I am who I am.”
