The liberal city of Los Angeles has scraped Columbus Day due to pressure from social justice warriors and Native American Groups.
The holiday, which falls on the second Monday in October, will be used to commemorate “indigenous, aboriginal and native people,” much to the chagrin of Italian-American groups, the Los Angeles Times reported.
But fear not lefty fans of government spending, the politically correct replacement ensured the day will still be a paid holiday for government employees.
Italian-Americans said they supported the idea of an Indigenous People’s Day, and would celebrate it with Native Americans, but asked for it to be held on another day.
“On behalf of the Italian community, we want to celebrate with you,” Federated Italo-Americans of Southern California President Ann Potenza to a room of Native American activists. “We just don’t want it to be at the expense of Columbus Day.”
But in this day and age of erasing history, that compromise was unacceptable.
“To make us celebrate on any other day would be a further injustice,” Los Angeles City-County Native American Indian Commission vice chair Chrissie Castro said.
Castro said the government needed to “dismantle a state-sponsored celebration of genocide of indigenous peoples.”
“This gesture of replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day is a very small step in apologizing and in making amends,” Councilman Mike Bonin, whose great-grandparents were Italian immigrants, said.
But fellow Councilman Joe Buscaino disagreed saying, Columbus Day ought to be replaced with a holiday that is a celebration of all cultures.
While the Democrats who control the city patted themselves on the back, many in the Italian-American community remain unhappy.
“Why don’t you stop picking on Christopher Columbus as though you’re picking on our people,” Beverly Hills resident John Giovanni Corda told the Times. “We never hurt you. We never wanted to hurt you.”
