A former Venezuelan military chief lawmaker may have put out a hit on Sen. Marco Rubio.
Federal intelligence officials believe that, Diosdado Cabello, a powerful leader in Venezuela’s Socialist Party, put out the order to kill the Florida senator last month, according to the Miami Herald.
The threat was uncovered by the Herald in a non-classified, but “law enforcement sensitive,” memo that was sent to law enforcement agencies last month.
The memo said that there was an “order to have Senator Rubio assassinated,” but that “no specific information regarding an assassination plot against Senator Rubio has been garnered thus far” and that the U.S. had not verified it.
The memo also stated that Cabello might have contacted “unspecified Mexican nationals” to carry out the hit.
The senator has been guarded by security in both Miami and Washington for weeks, according to the report.
Rubio and Cabello have been embroiled in a long and bitter public feud in which Rubio called the Venezuelan, who is suspected by the U.S. of being a drug pusher, the “Pablo Escobar of Venezuela.”
Often, Rubio has taken his fight against Cabello to social media.

And vice versa.
Narco Rubio, alias @marcorubio, lo peor de la política imperial, aparece como el defensor de los terroristas que atacaron Fuerte Paramacay.
— Diosdado Cabello R (@dcabellor) August 6, 2017
A rough translation from Twitter reads “Narco Rubio, alias @marcorubio, the worst of the imperial policy, appears as the defender of the terrorists who attacked strong Paramacay.”
The accusation being that Rubio was behind an uprising at a Venezuelan military base.
Both Rubio and Cabello have not made a comment on the report to the Miami Herald, who reached out to both.
