‘We got rules around here’: Liquor store stands by controversial sign blasting saggy britches

An Oklahoma City liquor store can be sure to face trumped-up calls of racism after hanging a sign telling customers wearing sagging, low-riding pants to stay out.

Midwest Wine & Spirits OKC employees say it’s a matter of security and respect.

The sign declares: “Pull your pants up or don’t come in!!! Try to have some decency & respect for others. No one wants to see your underwear.”

“It’s tacky, and it’s gross and we’re adults. Pull up your pants,” store employee Shana Wiessner told KFOR-TV.

She added that the policy also helps reduce thefts.

“When people come in with their pants sagging, it’s easier for them to steal bottles,” Wiessner said.

Customer Chad Gilbert told the NBC affiliate that he agrees with the sign.

“I don’t want to see anybody else’s underwear,” he said. “I realize wearing pants low is a fashion statement for some, but it doesn’t work for me and I find it somewhat offensive.”

In the end, Wiessner said if folks don’t want to comply, they don’t need their business.

“We got rules around here, people,” she declared.

As for the charges of racism, here’s a couple of early responses from Twitter:

But there were also supporters who not only like the signs, but would like to see other businesses adopt them:
