Welcome to ‘Brave New World’: Wisconsin company to start micro-chipping employees

This is as Orwellian as it gets.

A Wisconsin company is hearkening images of 1984 as it announced it will offer its employees the chance to have a microchip implanted between their thumbs and index fingers.

The company, Three Square Market, said the chips will allow employees to “make purchases in their break room micro market, open doors, login to computers, use the copy machine, etc.,” it said in a press release.

“We foresee the use of RFID technology to drive everything from making purchases in our office break room market, opening doors, use of copy machines, logging into our office computers, unlocking phones, sharing business cards, storing medical/health information, and used as payment at other RFID terminals. Eventually, this technology will become standardized allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc.,” CEO Todd Westby said.

The company said it got the idea to use the microchips when it visited a European company whose employees were chipped.

“When working with our operators over in Europe, we came across a company of chipped employees at BioHax International and the concept of using RFID with micro markets quickly grew,” Tony Danna, the company’s vice president of International Sales, said. “We see chip technology as the next evolution in payment systems, much like micro markets have steadily replaced vending machines. As a leader in micro market technology, it is important that 32M continues leading the way with advancements such as chip implants.”

Users will be able to pay for items in the break room by holding up their hand, the same way Apple Pay, Samung Pay or ANdroid Pay users hold up their mobile devices.

The company said the chips will have “no GPS tracking at all.”

That wasn’t enough to squash concerns of many on social media.
