Despite a DNA test saying otherwise, a Texas man is on the hook for $65,000 in back payments for child support fees.
Gabriel Cornejo, 45, was ordered by a court to pay child support in 2003 after his ex-girlfriend gave birth, naming him as the father, according to WABC-TV.
But it wasn’t until Cornejo, now a father of three, was served papers last year saying he had another child, that he learned of her assertion and the court order.

Doing the right thing, he met the “wonderful girl,” but learned he’s not the biological father after taking a DNA test, WABC-TV reported.
But the $65,000 in back payments is still his obligation.
“I never thought in my whole life I would have to defend myself of something that I am innocent of,” Cornejo said.
The ABC affiliate said a “default judgement” was issued and the state of Texas started assessing child support payments, accounting for the sum now owed.
Cornejo said he was not told, despite court records suggesting that he got a subpoena years ago — he denies it and the record is not definitive prove, according to WABC-TV.
The ex-girlfriend’s lawyer claimed child support was taken from Cornejo’s paycheck long ago, and were not disputed.
Either way, the DNA test is what it is, and Cornejo’s lawyer insists he did not know.
“They say he should have fought back then, and he failed to do so,” attorney Cheryl Coleman said. “But how can you fight something you don’t know anything about?”
