The crack Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has created a Heartland Engagement committee to reach out to those “angry white men” in flyover country, as former Vice President Joe Biden recently described working class voters abandoned by his party.
And the first “Ambassador to Podunk” will be Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Illinois, who will mentor Democratic candidates and help shape an economic message in rural areas, according to Roll Call.
“Cheri is a key member of our leadership team, and her efforts to help recruit and mentor candidates and carry our economic message is critical to our strategy this cycle,” DCCC chairman Rep. Ben Ray Luján said in a statement.
Luján believes “the House is in play” — Democrats need 24 seats to regain control in 2018.
And they’re courting voters who likely voted for President Donald Trump in 2016.
“The heartland is critical to winning back the majority,” Burros said Tuesday in a statement, “and we must do a better job listening to the hardworking families from small towns and rural communities if we hope to earn their support.”
“As Democrats, we believe in making sure everyone has a chance to find a good-paying job, raise a family and live the American dream — regardless of where they call home,” she continued. “As the Chair of Heartland Engagement, I’m looking forward to helping lead our efforts to build a lasting partnership with the hardworking men and women of America’s heartland.”
