Mainstream news outlets gearing headlines toward a core audience is nothing new, but USA Today bordered on blatantly lying with its Supreme Court headline on Monday.
In response to the court’s decision to hear an appeal from a baker who was punished for declining to bake a wedding cake for a homosexual couple, the newspaper tweeted “The Supreme Court has agreed to reopen the national debate over same-sex marriage.”

The headline on its website read “Supreme Court will hear religious liberty challenge to gay weddings.”
But the case is actually about Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, who appealed a decision by lower courts that said his shop violated a public accommodations law in 2012 when he declined to make the cake.
The court is not deciding on the legality of same sex marriage, as the USA Today headline suggested.
And the newspaper was hammered on social media for its misleading headline.
Two young men steal a guy’s dirtbike; he runs them down with his van – now it’s a race thing!
This headline is highly misleading…..not about same sex marriage – about whether all must be forced to participate in it. Big difference

The Supreme Court is about to make it illegal for gays to get married without the participation of Christian bakers? That seems wierd. ?

you may want to re-write this headline, because it’s not true at all
— Chris (@ChrisMears00) June 26, 2017
Fake News. The case is about whether the government can force people to participate in the charade of so-called “gay marriage.”

How is the wedding cake issue reopen the national debate on gay marriage? This case is about religion more than anything else.
— Scout202Sport (@Scout202sport) June 26, 2017
Not at all about Gay marriage about not having to participate with a gun to their heads
— So-Cal-Mntn-Man (@wrightdlca) June 26, 2017
Does the baker have to sign the marriage certificate? Is he legally authorized to declare people couples?
— Hughard Mill (@howiemill93) June 26, 2017
Highly irresponsible tweet/article. No one is debating whether gays can marry – the debate is whether Christians have to bake their cakes.
