Newt Gingrich stood by an early report that he advised President Donald Trump to exclude CNN from the White House briefing room, describing them as “propaganda network.”
Appearing on Fox News, Gingrich explained his position to host Martha McCallum, who asked for clarification.
“When Harvard reports that a network is 93 percent negative, they are not a news network,” he said. “They are an attack network.”
Not that Trump needs the reminder, opting to mock the devastated CNN studio after Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff lost the special election in Georgia.
Nonetheless, the former speaker was just getting warmed up in his critique.
“These people find excuses, talking points to attack Donald Trump all day, every day,” Gingrich said. “The new president of France kicked two networks out because he said they were propaganda networks. I regard CNN as a propaganda network.”
He reiterated that the Trump administration should cut CNN out of the loop altogether.
“Explain to me why, if you look at a reporter who you know 9 times out of 10 is going to be negative, why would you allow them to ask a question?” Gingrich asked. “What good does it possibly serve the president?”
There have been recent changes to the White House briefings, with press secretary Sean Spicer showing little sympathy for reporters like CNN’s Jim Acosta, who had a conniption over the new rules.
McCallum did push back on Gingrich’s assertions, in the name of journalism, saying: “All the important questions need to be asked. And there needs to be transparency in the White House, and they need to answer questions.”
