The parents of Otto Warmbier have placed much of the blame for their son’s incarceration in a North Korean prison on former President Obama.
During a Thursday press conference Fred Warmbier, the father of the man jailed for stealing a poster in North Korea, called the communist regime’s actions, that resulted in his son being in a coma, unconscionable.

“Even if you believe their explanation of botulism and a sleeping pill – and we don’t – there is no excuse for any civilized nation to have kept his condition secret and denied him top-notch medical care for so long,” he said.
“There’s no excuse for the way the North Koreans treated our son and the way they have treated so many others,” he said.

“We have been brutalized for the past 18 months with misinformation and no information,” he added. “We’re just thrilled that he is on American soil.”
Then, while wearing the same jacket his son wore to his sentencing in North Korea, he directed his aim at the Obama administration.

“When Otto was first taken, we were advised by the past administration to take a low profile, while they worked to obtain his release. We did so without resolve,” the elder Warmbier said. “Earlier this year, Cindy and I decided the time for strategic patience was over, and we made a few media appearances and traveled to Washington to meet with ambassador Joe Yun at the state department.”
But everything changed when Warmbier did an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
“We went public with an interview on the Tucker Carlson show, did a couple of written pieces and very quickly we have Otto home,” he said.
When asked if he thought the Obama administration did not do enough to get his son home, Warmbier said”‘I think the results speak for themselves.”
He told reporters that President Obama “never once” spoke to him or his family during their ordeal, but President Trump did.

“To be honest, I avoided conversations with him because…to what end? This is about Otto. But I took the call and it was gracious, it felt good and I thank him for that,” Warmbier said.
