Authorities might have found Islamic cleric who helped inspire London attacks – in Michigan

The reason for the terror attacks in London last week might have come from a radical Islamic cleric in the United States.

Authorities in Europe and the United States are checking into the possibility that a Michigan based cleric, Ahmad Musa Jebril, was the man who inspired the attackers who ran over and stabbed their victims in the June 3 attack, Reuters reported.

Jebril had been residing in the Detroit area for many years, according to the report, and is one of several online propagandists who could have been responsible for inspiring the radical Islamic terrorist attackers.

It first became known that the U.S. based cleric might have had an inspirational role in the attacks when a friend of one of the men told the Detroit News in an interview that his friend “used to listen to a lot of Musa Jibril.”

“I have heard some of this stuff and it’s very radical. I am surprised this stuff is still on YouTube and is easily accessible,” the man added.

In June of 2005 the News ran a story on Jebril, “a U.S. citizen of Palestinian descent,” that said “Ahmad [Jebril] and his father…were convicted on 42 counts of an indictment charging them with bank fraud, conspiracy, money laundering and other counts. [He] was sentenced to 5 years and 10 months in prison; his father, to 4 years and 10 months.”

Prosecutors in the case showed during the sentencing phase that Jebril “had sent a fax to CNN in 1996 claiming responsibility for the Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, warning ‘[t]here will be a series of bombings that will follow no matter how many lives of ours are taken.’”

“It comes as no surprise to me that one of the London attackers would have been listening” to Jebril, Laith Alkhouri, of Flashpoint, a group that monitors the Internet activity of militants, told Reuters.

Attempts by Reuters to receive comment from Jebril were unsuccessful.
