A new billboard on an Indiana highway has some Muslims up in arms.
The sign lists the qualifications for “the perfect man,” which is what Muslims call the prophet Mohammad, but the things listed are anything but perfect.
“Married a 6-year-old,” “Beheaded 600 Jews in one day,” “Slave owner & dealer,” “13 wives, 11 at one time,” “Rapist” and “Tortured & killed unbelievers,” are the qualities the sign lists.
“I was a little disappointed when I saw that,” Farial Khatri, who is from the Islamic Society of North America, told the local Fox affiliate WXIN.
“We do support free speech, but we do realize this is also rooted in bigotry,” he said.
Indiana representative Andre Carson told the Indianapolis Star that the sign takes the Koran out of context “just like Al-Qaeda, ISIS and the Klan do to religious texts to justify their bigotry.”
She said she was disappointed that people used their First Amendment right “to spread hateful, vile things that are divisive to people.”
“I think there’s a way to debate and be socratic without being disrespectful or undermining people and causing a sense of isolation,” she added.
Republican Sen. Todd Young also expressed his displeasure with the sign in a tweet on Monday.
This is beneath us — disturbing and divisive. Displays like this incite and offend rather than educate. https://t.co/J1d6R0WsSJ
