Portland mayor wants pro-Trump free speech rights cancelled after train stabbing

What is it about Democrats and the desire to quell free speech?

The mayor of Portland is calling for a “Trump Free Speech Rally” to be cancelled after an alleged white supremacist and self-described nihilist stabbed two people to death on a commuter train last week.

Mayor Ted Wheeler is urging organizers to help bring about “changes in the political dialogue in this country,” the New York Post reported.

The U.S. General Services Administration, which manages the site of the scheduled free speech rally, issued a permit for Saturday, according to the Post, and is reportedly considering a permit for a “March Against Sharia” event on June 10, which the local media is describing as an anti-Muslim event.

Wheeler says he’s concerned participants are “coming to peddle a message of hatred,” which he insists is not protected by the Constitution. Not only does he associate last week’s vicious attack with President Donald Trump, the mayor dismisses those planning to attend the events as bigots.

“I urge them to ask their supporters to stay away from Portland,” Wheeler said, according to OPD.org. “There is never a place for bigotry or hatred in our community, and especially not now.”

The two men killed were intervening to help two women, one wearing a hijab, being verbally abused by a man making anti-Muslim remarks — the same man was seen on video the day before ranting about Muslims, Christians and Jews on a train, the Post reported.

According to a Facebook event page, Saturday’s rally will feature Kyle Chapman, a Trump supporter who considers himself an American nationalist. He was arrested at a March protest at the University of California, Berkeley, which has become a hotbed of anti-free speech activity.

“There will be speakers exercising their free speech, live music, flags, and an uplifting experience to bring back strength and courage to those who believe in freedom,” said the description.\
