French president admits intense handshake with Trump ‘wasn’t innocent’

French President Emmanuel Macron admitted on Sunday to intentionally engaging in an intense handshake with President Donald Trump as a show of strength.

The newly elected Macron Macron told French paper Le Journal du Dimanche that the handshake “wasn’t innocent” and referred to it as a “moment of truth,” according to a translation from the Associated Press.

“One must show that you won’t make small concessions, even symbolic ones, but also not over-publicize things, either,” he said.

The Washington Post noted last week that Macron was advised about President Trump’s strong handshake before he met with him.
