A high school is Detroit, Michigan is gearing up to hold their annual “all-girls” prom aimed at upholding the sacred customs of Muslim girls. The idea began in 2012, and it has been held at the High School consistently every year since.
As reported by Michigan Live:
A Detroit-area high school is holding an all-girls prom to create a comfortable and safe environment for girls who cannot attend the traditional co-ed prom for cultural reasons.
That’s right. Boys are not allowed.
Five Muslim girls from Hamtramck High School started “Princess Prom” in 2012 to give girls the opportunity to dress up as they please and dance the night away. Last year, 230 girls showed up to the dance at the PNA Banquet Hall in Hamtramck. This year, the team expects about 250 in attendance.
The group fails to highlight several gaping problems with this event and the message it is actually sending.
One, why do Muslim girls need a “safe-space” from Islam and boys? As Steven Crowder pointed out: is Islamic culture so stringent that Muslim girls aren’t typically allowed to celebrate an event like this without fear of repercussion?
If Islam isn’t oppressive, why can’t these girls remove their hijabs and “let their hair down” any other time?
Secondly, prom has nothing to do with religion or culture.
“Prom is not a right. Prom is not a time for segregation, it’s an event where people actually come together. They dance, celebrate, touch. What is the point is how religious segregation, specifically a religion which actively separates women from men, should not have a Muslim-only event at a school, especially since that religious group promotes gender segregation,” asks Crowder.
Many across social media pointed out the hypocrisies of normalizing the idea of segregation, especially at high schools.
