Texas Gov Abbott live-streams signing of law to allow jail for ‘Sanctuary City’ sheriffs

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott put the kibosh on sanctuary cities in his state on Sunday night when he live streamed himself signing a law banning them.

“Texans expect us to keep them safe, and that is exactly what we are going to do by me signing this law,” he said before he signed the bill.

The law, which allows for the apprehension and jailing of sheriffs and police chiefs who don’t enforce federal immigration laws, was passed by the Texas House of Representatives in April.

“Citizens expect law enforcement officers to enforce the law,” the governor said. “Citizen deserve law breakers to face legal consequences.”

The bill was passed by the state Senate three days ago.

“Elected officials and law enforcement agencies, they don’t get to pick and choose which laws they will obey,” he said.

The law will undoubtedly be challenged in court by groups like the American Civil Liberties Union, who issued a statement Sunday.

“This is an assault on humanity,” Texas ACLU Executive Director Terri Burke said in the statement, the Dallas Morning News reported. “It will not stand.”

Burke vowed to fight the law “in the courts, at the ballot box and in the streets if we have to.”

“This racist and wrongheaded piece of legislation ignores our values, imperils our communities and sullies our reputation as a free and welcoming state,” because enforcing the law is racist, according to Burke.

The law is set to go into effect on Sept. 1.
