British prime minister calls for new general election amid political fighting

The United Kingdom was shocked on Monday when Prime Minister Theresa May gave British citizens a second bite at the apple.

May made the announcement at Downing Street and said she wants a new general “snap” election on June 8, in an effort to strengthen her position in Brexit negotiations.

The prime minister, whose Conservative Party, also known as the Tory Party, holds a slim lead in the House of Commons, reversed course on having a special election after repeatedly saying there would not be one, CNN reported.

May said a victory for her party in the special election would end the Labour Party’s attempts to stop the Brexit process that will see the UK leave the European Union.

“If we do not hold a general election now, their political game playing will continue,” May said.

“There should be unity here in Westminster, but instead there is division. The country is coming together, but Westminster is not,” she told reporters. “We need a general election and we need one now.”

Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn welcomed the news.

Response on social media was mixed, and May’s move could be all but a slam dunk.
