Trump backs Flynn! No reasonable person should subject themselves to politicized ‘WITCH-HUNT’

Former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn has a “story to tell” and he’s willing to tell it if he is immune from prosecution.

And President Donald Trump agrees that the general should seek immunity from the “witch hunt.”

Following reports on Thursday that Flynn offered to testify before Congress in exchange for immunity, his attorney, Robert Kelner, released a statement.

“General Flynn certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it, should circumstances permit,” the statement read.

“No reasonable person, who has the benefit of advice from counsel, would submit to questioning in such a highly politicized, witch-hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution,” Kelner wrote.

Adding to the controversy, nowhere in the statement was the word immunity mentioned and several people, including House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes, have denied that Gen. Flynn asked for immunity.

A spokesman for Nunes denied that the general “offered to testify to HPSCI in exchange for immunity.” That statement was corroborated by a Democrat aide on the panel as well, according to ABC News.

It’s normal to ask for assurances at this stage in order to protect oneself from having their words used to prosecute them, according to the New York Times.

“At this early stage, I wouldn’t read anything into this request beyond smart lawyering,” Washington lawyer Mark Zaid, a national security specialist, told the Times. “In such a politically charged, high-profile national security case, I couldn’t imagine not first asking for immunity.”

“I would suspect both Congress and the F.B.I. will first generate additional evidence from smaller players before deciding to immunize General Flynn,” he said.

The Washington Post, New York Times and the Wall St. Journal that first reported on Flynn requesting immunity are standing by the original reports.
