‘No, no. Hell no!’ Fearful Dems might try to hustle a deal on Gorsuch, but WHY would GOP do that?

Democrats are smelling blood in the water – theirs – and it looks like they are willing to make a deal with Republicans on the confirmation of Judge Gorsuch.

But why would Republicans even dream of taking it?

Multiple sources have told Politico that, fearful of gaining nothing at all if Republicans use the so-called “nuclear option” to force a vote on Gorsuch, Dems are discussing offering a non-filibustered, up-or-down vote in exchange for Republican promises to NOT use the nuclear option on the next Supreme Court nominee.

Wait, did Judge Gorsuch just eye roll Al Franken? Check out ‘favorite response of the day’

From the Politico story:

The next high court opening could alter the balance of the court, and some Democrats privately argue that fight will be far more consequential than the current one.

If Democrats move ahead with the plan — it’s still in the early discussion phase — it would require buy-in from some Republicans, but not necessarily Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) or his top deputies. At least three rank-and-file GOP members would have to pledge not to vote to unilaterally change the Senate rules through a majority-only vote later in Trump’s term — the so-called nuclear option.

The truly scary part here is the fact that it would only take a few Republicans to cobble this thing together. One can imagine a few RINO Republicans like John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Olympia Snowe slavering at the mouth at this possibility to betray their voters yet again.

When it comes to the vacancy left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, Republicans are now holding ALL the cards. They have a well-spoken, supremely qualified, non-controversial nominee with no major skeletons lurking in his closet, a united conservative base, a Senate majority, and the availability of the “nuclear option” provided to them by former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (thanks, Harry!).

So why on earth would they make any kind of a deal with Democrats in exchange for allowing a non-nuclear-option vote on Judge Gorsuch?

According to Politico, some Democrats think Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is “loath to change Senate rules on a majority vote” because he is fearful of what Democrats will do if their party regains control of the Senate and White House. While that may be true. McConnell surely also knows that Democrats wouldn’t hesitate to impose their will anyway, regardless of what Republicans do now. After all, isn’t that what Harry Reid did?

Leonard Leo, an adviser to President Trump on his SCOTUS pick, calls Democrats who think Republicans would take a deal like this “delusional.”

“Democrats must be delusional to think that Leader McConnell or any of his Republican colleagues would reward Democrats for their awful treatment of Neil Gorsuch,” said Leo, “One way or the other his confirmation is all but assured.”

Let’s hope so, because making a deal like that would be stupidity on a massive scale… but then again, nobody has ever accused establishment Republicans of being all that smart.
